Offshore Design & Specialized Engineering
Offshore structures make no allowance for error. They must stand up to a hostile environment, often operate with little or no crew aboard, and be fabricated, transported and installed safely at sea — all within tight weight and cost margins. Blue Lines brings its structural and systems engineering to exactly these demands, delivering offshore engineering and offshore platform design that is safe, reliable and efficient.
Our technical know-how extends naturally from ships to fixed and floating offshore structures. The same disciplines — detailed structural modelling, systems engineering, rigorous analysis and weight control — apply, sharpened by the unforgiving conditions offshore. What changes offshore is the cost of getting anything wrong: a structure that cannot be lifted, transported or installed as engineered, or one whose weight has crept beyond its supporting design, becomes a problem measured in vessels, cranes and weather windows rather than in drawing revisions. We integrate experience with innovation to keep those problems on the model, not the barge.
What’s included
Our offshore scope typically covers:
- Detailed 3D modelling — a complete structural and systems model as the single source of truth.
- Structural workshop drawings — production documentation for fabrication.
- Piping isometrics and workshop drawings — detailed piping design for fabrication and installation.
- Electrical and instrumentation work — power, control and instrumentation design and integration.
- Mechanical completion and equipment integration — bringing packages and equipment together to a completed installation.
- Project and site follow-ups — engineering support through fabrication and installation.
On the analysis side we deliver:
- Lifting, load-out and sea-fastening analysis — for safe transport and installation.
- Mooring-force calculation — for station-keeping and transport.
- Local strength analysis — verifying structure at critical details.
- Weight-control reporting — tracking and managing weight throughout the project.
Our process
- Basis and modelling. We establish the design basis and build a detailed 3D structural and systems model as the project’s backbone.
- Structural and systems engineering. We develop structure, piping, electrical and instrumentation to production level, coordinated in the model.
- Installation engineering. We analyse lifting, load-out, sea-fastening and mooring so the structure can be moved and installed safely.
- Verification. We run local strength analysis and maintain a weight-control report, tracking weight as a managed quantity throughout.
- Fabrication and site support. We support the fabrication yard and site through mechanical completion and installation follow-up.
Standards & classification
Offshore structures are engineered against the rules of the relevant classification society — DNV, Lloyd’s Register (LR), ABS, Bureau Veritas (BV), RINA, PRS or RS — and the statutory and industry framework applicable to the installation, including SOLAS and MARPOL where relevant. Our analysis of strength, lifting, load-out, sea-fastening and mooring is carried out to recognised offshore engineering practice, and weight is controlled to the discipline the offshore environment demands. Because installation engineering and structural design are inseparable offshore — how a structure will be lifted and set down shapes how it must be built — we develop them together rather than handing a finished structure to an installation team as an afterthought.
Deliverables
Clients receive detailed 3D models, structural and piping workshop drawings, piping isometrics, electrical and instrumentation documentation, lifting/load-out/sea-fastening and mooring analyses, local strength assessments and weight-control reports — coordinated so structure, systems and installation engineering are consistent.
Our LAMDA Crude Oil Platform, designed as a normally unattended installation that is remotely operable in all weather conditions, with a four-level deck served by two 6” risers, illustrates the specialised offshore work we deliver. A normally unattended installation raises the bar again: with no crew aboard to intervene, the design of the deck, systems and remote-control provisions has to be right the first time. That is the standard we bring to offshore engineering. To discuss an offshore structure, platform or specialised engineering scope, get in touch.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- What offshore engineering services do you provide?
- We cover detailed 3D structural modelling, structural workshop drawings, piping isometrics and workshop drawings, electrical and instrumentation work, mechanical completion and equipment integration, and project and site follow-up. On the analysis side we handle lifting, load-out and sea-fastening, mooring-force calculation, local strength analysis and weight control.
- Have you designed offshore platforms?
- Yes. Our LAMDA Crude Oil Platform is designed as a normally unattended installation (NUI), remotely operable in all weather, with a four-level deck served by two risers. It reflects the kind of specialised offshore structural and systems engineering we deliver.
- Why is weight control so important offshore?
- Offshore structures live and die by weight. Topside weight drives the design of the supporting structure, the lifting and installation method and ultimately the cost, and margins are tight. We maintain a weight-control report through the project so weight is tracked and managed rather than discovered late.
- Do you analyse lifting, load-out and sea-fastening?
- Yes. Getting an offshore structure from fabrication yard to final location safely is an engineering discipline in itself. We analyse lifting, load-out and sea-fastening, and calculate mooring forces, so transport and installation are engineered rather than improvised.
