Ship Workshop & Production Drawings

Workshop drawings are where a ship design finally meets steel. However elegant the basic design, a shipyard cannot cut, bend, weld or assemble from general arrangements and scantling plans alone — it needs part-level documentation that is unambiguous, buildable and optimised for its own production line. Blue Lines produces exactly that: complete ship workshop drawings and production drawings for shipbuilding, including the nesting and CNC cutting files that take an approved design straight to the shop floor.

Working from Constanța for clients worldwide, our detail-design team has produced production documentation across tugs, workboats, barges, pontoons, technical vessels and complex conversions. We develop our own basic designs into production output, and we routinely take third-party or Class-approved designs and turn them into shop-ready documentation tuned to a specific yard’s practice.

What’s included

A full production-drawing package removes every open question between the design office and the workshop. Typical deliverables include:

  • Structural workshop drawings — plate and stiffener details, brackets, girders, floors and web frames, with all dimensions, thicknesses and material grades.
  • Weld and connection details — weld types and sizes, edge preparation, bevels, gaps and inspection requirements, following the approved structural design.
  • Nesting layouts — plates nested for maximum material yield, with remnant management and grain/rolling direction respected where it matters.
  • NC cutting files — machine-ready cutting data for plasma, oxy-fuel or laser tables, including bevel information and part marking.
  • Assembly and sub-assembly drawings — build-up sequences, panel and block breakdown, and fit-up information.
  • Part marking and identification — every part labelled so it reaches the right assembly at the right stage.
  • Material take-offs and part lists — accurate quantities for procurement and workshop planning.

Our process

  1. Design intake and review. We start from the Class-approved structural design — yours or ours — and reconcile it with your yard’s standard details, building method and available material. Discrepancies are raised and resolved before any production document is issued.
  2. 3D structural modelling. We build or extend a detailed 3D structural model so that parts, connections and clearances are verified in the model rather than discovered on the slipway.
  3. Detailing and nesting. Parts are detailed to shop level, then nested for optimal plate utilisation and generated as NC cutting files matched to your cutting equipment.
  4. Assembly definition. We define block and panel breakdown, assembly sequence and marking so the workflow from cut part to erected block is clear.
  5. Checking and issue. Every drawing is independently checked, revision-controlled and issued in a package the workshop can build from without ambiguity.
  6. Build support. We stay available through construction to answer queries, absorb approved changes and reissue affected documents under proper revision control.

Standards & classification

Production documentation is only as good as its fidelity to the approved design and the rules behind it. Our workshop drawings carry through the scantlings, weld sizes and connection details required by the relevant classification society — DNV, Lloyd’s Register (LR), ABS, Bureau Veritas (BV), RINA, PRS and RS — and remain consistent with the statutory framework governing the vessel, such as SOLAS, MARPOL and, for inland units, ES-TRIN. Where a project is executed under flag-authority or national rules — for example AMSA or IRISH requirements — the production package reflects those too. Revision control keeps the shop building from current, approved information at all times.

Deliverables

Clients receive a coordinated, revision-controlled package: structural workshop drawings, weld and connection details, nested plate layouts, machine-ready NC cutting files, assembly and sub-assembly drawings, part-marking data and material take-offs. We deliver using industry-standard CAD/CAE and production-drawing software and 3D modelling and nesting tools, in the file formats your production line actually uses — commonly DXF/DWG for cutting, PDF for shop drawings and the native model when required.

The result of good production documentation is visible in the built vessel: less rework, better material yield, cleaner fit-up and a predictable build. Projects such as our BLU 115 Inland Ice-Class Tug and BLU 131 Ro-Ro Pontoon reached the workshop as complete, buildable packages rather than drawings that still needed interpretation.

If you have an approved design that needs turning into shop-ready documentation, or a newbuilding that needs production drawings and cutting files from the ground up, get in touch and we will scope a package around your yard’s way of building.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are ship workshop drawings?
Workshop drawings — also called production or shop drawings — are the fully detailed documents a shipyard builds from. They translate the Class-approved structural design into part-level information: plate and profile geometry, weld details, bevels, assembly sequences and marking, plus the nesting and cutting files that drive the CNC machines. Nothing is left to interpretation on the shop floor.
Do you produce nesting and CNC cutting files?
Yes. We generate nested plate layouts and NC cutting files optimised for material yield and for your cutting equipment, whether plasma, oxy-fuel or laser. Bevel data, part marking and identification are embedded so parts arrive at assembly correctly labelled and ready to fit.
Can you work from another company's basic or Class-approved design?
Absolutely. A large share of our workshop-drawing work develops third-party basic designs into production documentation. We reconcile the approved design with your yard's building practice, standard details and available material, and flag any discrepancies before they reach the workshop.
Which software and file formats do you deliver in?
We work with industry-standard CAD/CAE and production-drawing software and 3D modelling and nesting tools, and deliver in the formats your yard uses — commonly DXF/DWG for cutting, PDF for shop drawings, and the native model where required. Buyers often search for tools such as ShipConstructor, AVEVA Marine or NAPA; we align our output to whatever drives your production line.
How do you keep the drawings consistent with Class approval?
Every production detail traces back to the approved structural design and the applicable rules of the classification society — DNV, Lloyd's Register, ABS, Bureau Veritas, RINA, PRS or RS. Scantlings, weld sizes and connection details are carried through faithfully, and revisions are controlled so the shop always builds from the current, approved information.
